The spinal cord is an essential part of the human body. It is responsible for sending messages from the brain to all parts of the body, and messages from the body to the brain. We’re able to perceive pain and move our limbs because of messages sent through the spinal cord. Without the full function of the spinal cord, those with spinal cord injuries are unable to feel or move the limbs related to the affected portions of the spine, which means they need an elevated level of care and assistance. When a spinal cord is injured due to an accident, like a car or motorcycle accident or a botched medical procedure, there is an extra level of pain and disappointment in adapting to the new injury and way of life.
For the injured person and their families, the aftercare that comes from a spinal cord injury can be expensive. The victim will need special treatment, care, and equipment that can be a financial burden to families. In order to help manage the special care and physical therapy that spinal cord injury patients oftentimes need to live independently, it’s imperative that you contact a skilled injury attorney with experience representing clients with substantial injuries.
The attorneys with Kiley Law Group, led by Tom Kiley, Sr., have been representing the injured in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, ensuring that they have the resources they need to thrive. Spinal cord injuries are life-changing injuries that can take months or years to heal if they ever do. With that said, obtaining the resources to be able to afford the necessary care should be a priority. Contact Kiley Law Group today to get started.
A spinal cord injury is typically the furthest thing from a person’s mind in the realm of injuries that could happen in an accident. However, auto and motorcycle accidents are the leading cause of spinal cord injuries, accounting for almost half of new spinal cord injuries each year. Following an accident, it is common to be sad, angry and confused about the accident, injury and prognosis. While the attorneys at the Kiley Law Group cannot promise a positive prognosis, they can promise that they have committed and experienced attorneys ready to help you obtain what you need to recover.

Spinal cord injuries are severe injuries that directly impact the lives of those who suffer from them and their families. In the United States, there are around 200,000 people living with spinal cord injuries. It’s estimated that more than 12,000 people will become victims of spinal cord injuries every year. The cost of treatment can be as much as $30,000 per patient every year.
The spinal cord consists of millions of nerves that link your brain to the rest of your body. When the spinal cord is damaged, the body stops receiving signals from the brain, resulting in paralysis or loss of sensation. Depending on where the injury hits the spinal cord, the body below that point may no longer be functional. There are also two tracts—one ascending and one descending—that carry information to the brain and send signals back to the rest of the body. In the event of a complete spinal cord injury, both tracts will be damaged, which means both sides of the body are equally affected.
In a medical evaluation, physicians will look for the following signs of a spinal cord injury:
Loss of sensation in the limbs
Muscle contractions
Fractured or dislocated vertebrae
Paralysis or low muscle strength
Loss of normal bowel or bladder control
