The Intersection of Criminal and Civil Trial Experience

Attorney Ted Cranney has been a member of the Massachusetts Bar since 1988, bringing over three decades of trial experience to his practice. Throughout his career, Ted has been involved in hundreds of trials across both criminal and civil courts in the Commonwealth, earning a reputation for thorough preparation, relentless advocacy, and courtroom success.

Growing up as the youngest of eight children in Peabody, Massachusetts, Ted attended St. John’s Preparatory High School in Danvers before studying at Clark University in Worcester. While at Clark, he was a member of the Varsity Men’s Ice Hockey Team from 1979 to 1981, honing the discipline and determination that would define his career.

Ted began his professional journey as an investigator for the District Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Massachusetts. There, he tracked and arrested defendants in warrant status, both within and beyond the Commonwealth, building a foundation of investigative and legal skills that would propel him into law school and beyond.

In 1984, Ted entered New England School of Law, earning his Juris Doctor in 1988. During law school, he continued working in the District Attorney’s Office and was sworn in as an Assistant District Attorney upon graduation.

A Distinguished Career in Prosecution

Ted’s career as a prosecutor began in the Lawrence District Court, one of the busiest in Massachusetts, where he handled both felony and misdemeanor cases. Within 18 months, he was promoted to supervise a trial team of eight attorneys, managing both bench and jury trials.

In 1990, Ted advanced to the Superior Court trial team in Essex County, prosecuting complex major felonies, including homicides, rapes, and other serious offenses. His meticulous trial preparation and skillful advocacy led to multiple successful convictions.
In 1994, District Attorney Kevin Burke appointed Ted as Director of Training for the office, where he mentored other prosecutors, developing their trial skills and techniques. Ted served as a prosecutor until 2003, retiring from state service with an exceptional record of courtroom success.

Transition to Private Practice

Since 2003, Ted has applied his extensive trial experience to representing clients in both criminal and civil matters in the private sector. His deep understanding of the law, combined with his strategic approach to trial preparation, has led to favorable outcomes for his clients. Whether defending against criminal charges or advocating in civil litigation, Ted brings the same dedication, precision, and determination that defined his career as a prosecutor.
